Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki created this print of various musical instruments in the late eighteenth century. Here we see a neatly organized array of instruments, from the percussion at the top to the stringed instruments in the middle, all the way to the keyboard at the bottom. This was a time when musical knowledge was spreading through the middle classes, especially in the German-speaking lands where Chodowiecki lived. Printed images of musical instruments played a role in making that knowledge accessible. They were pedagogical tools. This print is not just a representation of musical instruments but an instruction in musical culture. We might think about it as a visual counterpart to the musical treatises and methods that were circulating at the time. We can better understand its role by exploring printed sources from the period, like instructional manuals and musical scores. These resources reveal the social dynamics through which music was taught, performed, and appreciated.
