Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich created "Battle of the Tritons," an etching, around 1763. During the 18th century, European art often looked to classical mythology to explore themes of power, conflict, and the human condition. This print depicts a struggle between male sea deities, their muscular bodies and fierce expressions embodying an aggressive masculinity, and a distressed female figure. Consider how the "battle" plays out through the figures; does it valorize a specific type of masculine identity? How does the female figure complicate the scene? The struggle between the figures becomes a stage for exploring societal power dynamics. The piece invites us to reflect on how historical narratives, even those set in mythology, mirror and shape real-world attitudes towards gender and power. What does this battle tell us about who gets to be a hero, and who is relegated to the role of a bystander?
