These two lamps were made by Constantin Brâncuși, but the date is unknown, and made of stone, brass and electrical components. Isn’t it funny how functional objects can become works of art? What interests me about these lamps is their process, I imagine Brâncuși selecting these materials and combining them, intuitively, without any real sense of where it would lead. The rough hewn stone and the cold metal combine in an unexpected way. Brâncuși's process emphasizes the material qualities of his chosen media. Look at the cross-shaped base of the lamps, the stone looks crumbly and rough, contrasting with the sleekness of the brass stem and the delicate glass bulb. It's kind of like he's taking ordinary, everyday things and giving them a new life. Reminds me of the work of Sherrie Levine, who also invites us to reconsider art and value through unexpected juxtapositions. It's all part of this ongoing conversation about what art is, what it can be, and how we see the world around us.
