Editor: Here we have Francis Alexander's portrait of Francis Calley Gray. It strikes me as a very formal, almost austere depiction. What can you tell me about this piece? Curator: Well, I see a man of intellect and position. The somber tones and the included bust suggest a connection to classical ideals, a popular affectation among the elite. Does he appear perhaps a little *too* serious, or is that just the impression we get from our modern perspective? Editor: He does seem quite serious. The muted palette certainly reinforces that feeling. I suppose portraiture of the time was often intended to convey a sense of gravitas. Curator: Precisely! And the books on the table? Are they props, or are they clues to his character? Perhaps both. Anyway, this portrait really whispers of a particular time and place, doesn’t it? It makes me wonder about his story. Editor: It certainly does! It makes me want to know more about the world he inhabited.
