Kamisaka Sekka created "Yoshino" using mineral pigments on paper, a traditional approach to painting in Japan. The work has a serene quality, achieved through the careful application of flat color. The velvety texture of the mineral pigments gives depth to the stylized mountain forms. Sekka carefully built up layers of pigment to achieve smooth, opaque surfaces. Note the stark contrast between the flat planes of color and the delicate, stenciled cherry blossoms. This contrast, combined with the simplified forms, results in a composition that feels both modern and timeless. Sekka was part of the Rinpa school, which emphasized decorative and stylized depictions of nature. But he also embraced modern design principles, bringing a fresh perspective to traditional techniques. By blurring the boundaries between craft and fine art, Sekka reminds us of the value of both innovation and tradition.
