This small photographic print shows a building made of stones with a drainage system and was made by an anonymous artist. Look at how the stones are placed, one next to the other, like dabs of paint. The photo has a texture that’s really something. It feels rough, but not in a bad way, more like a beautiful, intentional roughness. The greys are layered in such a way that they appear like the work of an abstract painter. The water, the wall, the trees, the life buoy: each plane of depth has its own texture. There's something about the balance of light and shadow here that makes me think of Gerhard Richter. Both artists play with focus and the way the eye sees. This photograph is about seeing as much as it is about representing a place or structure.
