Ľudovít Čordák made this painting of the landscape with Hornád river with oil paints, but when, I couldn't tell you. There’s such a tangible sense of place in this painting. I mean, look at the sky! All these layers of grey-blue and fluffy white. The paint application is quite simple. You can see how he builds up the image in these small, squarish brushstrokes, especially in the clouds and the foliage. There's a nice contrast between the density of the trees and the open space of the water. I think the way he applied the paint makes it feel so immediate, like he was really there, trying to capture a fleeting moment. This reminds me a bit of Corot, who worked with a similar palette, but Čordák has more of a bluntness, less of a subtle blending of tones, which gives this scene a unique perspective. It’s this quality that really keeps me engaged.
