Reijer Stolk made this sketch of a muscular torso and upper arm, we don't know exactly when or with what. It's a very direct and process-driven way of working; Stolk puts down a series of lines and they just feel like they’re searching for the right place, the right form, the right mass. There's a real sense of touch in those marks. You can see how he's thinking through his hand, almost feeling the planes and contours of the body. Look at how the shoulder is described with just a few quick strokes, capturing the tension and volume of the muscle. It’s very delicate, very sensitive, almost like a dance. For me, the way he’s built up the form with these hesitant, searching lines reminds me a little of Giacometti's drawings. There’s a similar sense of probing and questioning, a feeling that the image is always in the process of becoming.
