Gilliam van der Gouwen created this print of the Last Supper and the Adoration of the Kings some time before 1740. The composition is divided, presenting two distinct yet thematically linked biblical scenes. On the left, we observe the Last Supper, constructed with a strong emphasis on linear perspective, drawing our eyes to the figure of Christ. The symmetry in the architecture and table arrangement offers a structured, almost stage-like setting, for the unfolding drama. Conversely, the Adoration scene is framed by an archway, creating depth. Here the figures are grouped to emphasize the human connection between the Magi, Mary, and the infant Jesus. The use of light and shadow in both scenes dictates the mood, with lighter areas directing our gaze to key figures and actions. The contrast between light and dark also serves to imbue the scenes with a sense of solemnity and reverence. The artist’s formal choices underscore the narratives, reinforcing their spiritual and emotional power.
