Albert Marquet created this landscape with pencil on paper, though the exact date remains unknown. Marquet, a contemporary of Matisse and a fellow Fauvist, spent much of his career traveling, often painting landscapes, cityscapes, and seascapes. In this work, we see a stark contrast to the vivid and bold colors often associated with the Fauvist movement. The near-monochromatic rendering of the landscape evokes a sense of quiet introspection, drawing us into the subtleties of form and texture. One might consider how travel itself shapes identity and perspective. Marquet's numerous journeys led him to represent diverse locales. Southern Hilly Landscape invites us to contemplate the relationship between place and identity, and how one’s personal history intertwines with the landscapes we encounter.
