George Hendrik Breitner made this study of two men’s heads using graphite on paper. The immediacy of the graphite medium allowed for the artist to capture the essence of his subjects. You can see how the quality of the graphite stick has given a range of effects, from light shading to more gestural, darker marks. Graphite is a relatively unassuming material, yet it’s directness makes it ideal for quick sketches and studies such as this. The artist's hand is clearly visible in the rapid strokes and smudges, which brings us closer to his way of seeing. This reflects the value of the artist's personal expression, rather than any grand statement of artistic vision. Ultimately, by appreciating the qualities of the materials and the process by which this drawing was made, we can see its cultural significance, moving beyond traditional hierarchies of art and craft.
