This is Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof’s undated design for a Nutrix rusk advertisement, made with graphite. Dijsselhof was a Dutch artist active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Here, we see a figure standing in the foreground with what appears to be a boat full of rusk. To the left, are several figures on horseback. Dijsselhof was deeply involved in the cultural and artistic movements of his time, which saw a rise of commercialism and advertising. Dijsselhof's design reflects both a modern embrace of commerce and a deep connection to historical artistic traditions. His visual style integrates symbolism and decorative elements reminiscent of medieval art. Although this is a commercial advertisement, the emotional tone is peaceful, as the artist invites us to slow down and consider the deeper historical narratives embedded within the seemingly simple design. This intersection of commerce and artistic heritage offers a unique lens through which to consider the emotional power of art.
