Curatorial notes

Philip Zilcken made this etching of a mill by a ditch. The image is formed from a series of tiny hatched lines that create a subtle, almost shimmering effect. Zilcken’s approach reminds us that artmaking is a process, a conversation between the artist and the materials. The texture of the paper and the ink create a tactile quality, drawing us into the scene. Look at the blades of the windmill, they’re not perfectly aligned, giving a sense of movement and life to the structure. The reflection of the mill in the water below is soft, broken by the light, making you consider the relationship between the solid and the ephemeral. It reminds me of Whistler’s etchings of the Thames. Both artists using a similar technique to capture the atmosphere of their surroundings. Ultimately, Zilcken's etching invites us to slow down and contemplate the beauty of the everyday.
