These velvet panels, whose maker we don't know, live at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. What strikes me first is the velvety texture, it’s a material that just begs to be touched, you know? The deep black and rich red invite the eye to linger. Look closely, and you can almost feel the soft pile. It's like diving into a sea of color, where light and shadow dance. Each fiber seems to have its own voice, creating a symphony of tactile sensations. The way the edges are cut, with that zig-zag, it's a little bit like a painting, where the artist leaves the edges raw and undefined. These panels remind me of Josef Albers' color studies, where he explored how colors interact and affect our perception. Like Albers, this anonymous artist invites us to contemplate the nuances of color and texture, to revel in the simple beauty of materials. It's a reminder that art can be found in the most unexpected places, if we only take the time to look.
