Mariam Aslamazian, sometime in the 20th century, made "The Jealous Mother" with oil on canvas. I wonder what Aslamazian was thinking when she made this? The title certainly gives it a strong and maybe even a bit of a melancholic feeling. I notice the way she uses bright colours. The orange of the mother’s top really pops against the purple of her skirt. See how the paint is applied in thick, visible strokes? It gives the painting a kind of raw, immediate feel. Then there’s the child, with their knowing expression! But is the mother jealous of the attention given to the child, or the child jealous of the mother's? Perhaps she just wanted to capture a moment, a feeling, something real about motherhood. It's a reminder that painting is, at its heart, a conversation – between the artist, the subject, and us, the viewers. Each of us bringing our own stories and experiences to the canvas.
