Maurice Prendergast made this painting, Opal Sea, with oil on canvas, and it feels like pure joy. Prendergast’s brushwork is like a mosaic, each stroke a deliberate choice, building a world that shimmers with light and color. Look closely at the figures on the beach: they’re built up from dabs of color that somehow coalesce into forms. The paint is applied in these short, thick strokes, giving the surface a tactile quality that invites you to reach out and touch it. It’s not about hiding the process, but celebrating it, and you see similar broken brushwork in someone like Bonnard. Take a look at the lower left corner. The way Prendergast uses color and light there, you could almost think you're looking at a late Cezanne. There's a real sense of movement and energy. Prendergast gives you the sensation of being there, amidst the crowd, feeling the sun on your skin and the sea breeze in your hair.
