Geoffrey Holt made this drawing of a hasp, with what looks like watercolor. It’s like he’s feeling around for the form, using the watery paint to get the delicacy of this metal object. Holt’s approach to mark-making is about the process. You can see the texture of the paper underneath, that’s because the paint is so thin. It’s a limited palette, just browns and grays, but there’s something so beautiful about the way he captures the essence of this object, this humble piece of hardware. Look at the small details, like the way he suggests the texture of the metal with little strokes of paint. It is so delicate, and quiet. Holt invites you to slow down and really see this object. And in doing so, he reveals its beauty. It reminds me a little bit of Giorgio Morandi’s still lifes.
