"De fangne og de frie. Nr. 1 i Chr. Winther og M. Rørbye, "25 Billeder for små børn"" is a wood engraving by Danish artist Adolph Kittendorff, created in 1846. This image depicts a small cottage with an open window and a birdcage inside. The viewer sees two birds outside of the window, one perched on the cottage roof and one flying away from the cottage. The image was created as part of a children's picture book and was intended to be a moralistic lesson about freedom and captivity. The contrasting imagery of the birds inside and outside the cage is a visual metaphor for the story. Today, this artwork is part of the collection at the SMK - Statens Museum for Kunst.
