This photograph captures Willem Witsen amidst a sea of faces in San Francisco. The classical architecture looms in the background, its columns and domes evoking the grandeur of ancient civilizations, symbols of power and order. The multitude is a fascinating motif. We see similar gatherings depicted in ancient Roman reliefs, or Renaissance paintings of civic ceremonies. The crowd embodies collective will, but also a latent chaos, a force that can either build or destroy. Think of the Dionysian revels, where the crowd loses itself in ecstatic frenzy! Here, the rigid formality of dress attempts to contain this potential disorder. Yet, the sheer mass of humanity hints at the primal power inherent in the collective, echoing through millennia of art and history, a constant reminder of our shared, sometimes volatile, social nature.
