This is a model of a double capstan, made by Rijkswerf Vlissingen. Consider this object as more than a mere replica. It reflects the socio-economic structure of maritime labor. Capstans like these were essential tools on ships, requiring coordinated effort from a group of sailors, often working-class men, to raise anchors or move heavy loads. The labor of many anonymous sailors is invisibly embedded in this design. These individuals, frequently from marginalized backgrounds, propelled the ships of exploration and trade, yet their identities and experiences are often overlooked in historical accounts. Models such as this one also served an important function in teaching how a ship was run to wealthy patrons. By understanding the capstan's function, we can appreciate the blend of human effort and mechanical advantage that was vital to maritime activities, and recognize the often unacknowledged contributions of those who operated these machines.
