This photograph titled, Interieur van de Hervormde Kerk te Monster na de brand, was taken after a fire at the Church. I see it as a study in texture, where the remaining structure almost becomes a sculpture. The artist, who remains anonymous, has framed the space as a process, the photograph becomes a way to examine the material qualities of the building and a record of its destruction. The light falls across the walls, accentuating the rough texture, each mark and broken piece telling its own story of the fire. I’m drawn to the way the photographer captures the contrast between the smooth stone and the jagged edges of the remaining walls, or the empty window spaces that frame the sky outside. It reminds me a little of the stark beauty of the Becher's photography, turning the ruins into something quite beautiful. It speaks to the endless conversation of art, where even in destruction, there's a form of beauty to be found.
