Marie Alexandre Duparc created this print, "Landschap met ruïnes aan het water," at the end of the 18th century. It’s a moment when Europe was on the cusp of dramatic social and political change. As we look at the couple overlooking the water, what do we see of their lives, and what remains hidden? The crumbling ruins in the landscape evoke a sense of the past. The figures are rendered in the style of the period, but their location on the edge of the water hints at the era's broader uncertainties. Duparc, as an artist, had to negotiate the expectations of his patrons and the market, alongside his own artistic vision. This print invites us to consider our relationship to history and to the lives of those who came before us. The romanticism of the scene softens a world of social upheaval with a sense of yearning for an idealized past.
