Nicolas Perelle created this print, 'Landschap met inladen van boot', which translates to 'Landscape with loading of boat' in the 17th century. The print was created with engraving, a process that involves cutting lines into a metal plate, applying ink, and then pressing paper against it. Looking at the artwork, you might notice the level of detail achieved with the use of fine, precise lines, that capture textures from the sky and water to architectural features and figures. The engraver's skill is evident in the controlled modulation of line thickness and density, used to create depth and shadow. Engraving was a painstaking process, requiring extensive training, patience and a steady hand. The technique was often used for reproducing existing paintings. This print, with it's serene landscape and busy dock, reflects both the artistic skill of the engraver and the labor involved in producing and trading prints, revealing a glimpse into the commercial art world of the period.
