Charles Jacque created this print, "Vrouw in rijkledij op een bank", sometime in the 19th century. The image depicts a woman dressed in what appears to be military-style clothing, seated on a bench in a garden setting. During the 1800s, women's roles were often confined to the domestic sphere, with societal expectations emphasizing passivity and obedience. Here, however, the woman's attire challenges traditional gender norms. Dressed in what seems to be a uniform, she occupies a space of authority and action typically reserved for men. The print invites us to consider the complexities of gender identity and performance. Does the woman's clothing represent a genuine embrace of masculine power, or is it a form of masquerade? Either way, this choice of self presentation encourages us to question the rigid boundaries that society often imposes on gender and identity. The woman’s gaze seems to invite us to question how we relate to gender expectations, and what it means to challenge those expectations.
