Johan Thomas Lundbye gifted us this blank page, a symbolic space made in the 19th century. It is not void, but rather, pregnant with potential. The blank page, a motif echoing through time, is first the tabula rasa of the classical world, a surface ready to receive the impressions of experience. Yet, it is also the mystic writing pad described by Freud, a metaphor for the human mind, perpetually open to inscription. Here, the blankness confronts us directly, reflecting our desires, fears, and expectations. Consider how medieval monks approached the vellum, charged with the weight of sacred texts yet to be inscribed. The blankness of the page mirrors our own internal void, inviting projections. It is both terrifying and liberating, and each viewer is challenged to confront the infinite possibilities that lie within its emptiness.
