Joseph Marie Vien's "Study of a Seated Model Wearing a Bishop's Chasuble and Mitre" is a detailed 18th century pencil drawing of a seated figure wearing a bishop's robe and mitre. The artist's focus on the folds of the fabric and the way the light catches the surface exemplifies Vien's skillful use of line and shading. The piece is a testament to the artist's interest in academic studies of form and drapery, showcasing the grandeur and intricacy of religious garments. This work, now part of the Minneapolis Institute of Art's collection, serves as a compelling example of Vien's academic approach to figure drawing.
Comments
We believe that Joseph-Marie Vien is very likely the author of this drawing, based on comparison with drawings he is known to have made. French academic drawings are notoriously difficult to attribute because of the rigorous, standardized training required of all academy students. And because Vien was also a highly regarded teacher, he had many imitators. Still, features such as the treatment of the drapery, the insistent parallel hatching, the line ends that touch without overlapping, and the chunky hands all point to Vien.
