This 1769 dulcimer by Antonio Battaglia is a beautiful example of a stringed instrument that was popular in the 18th century. The dulcimer's triangular shape and intricate design are typical of the period. The instrument's elegant, golden ornamentation and detailed craftsmanship highlight the beauty and skill of the maker. The dulcimer is played by striking the strings with small hammers, and is known for its sweet, melodic sound.
Comments
The dulcimer was played using hand-held hammers and may thus be seen as the forerunner of the piano. The variable dynamics and magical expression of the so-called Pantalon, the giant dulcimer invented by Pantaleon Hebenstreit, inspired many harpsichord makers to use hammer actions in their instruments. This small instrument belonged to Stadholder William V.
