Curatorial notes

This untitled work is a watercolor by Davyd Chychkan. The composition is stark and evocative, dominated by two fortress-like structures built of rough stones or sandbags, under a sky tinged with gray. On one, a statue of a woman stands guard; on the other, a figure sits, with a fiery explosion looming behind him. The structures are further fortified with rudimentary barricades, while medieval looking caltrops litter the scene, enhancing the feeling of siege and conflict. The use of watercolor gives the scene an ethereal quality, contrasting with the harshness of the barricades and the implied violence. The limited palette, dominated by grays, browns, and muted blues, evokes a somber atmosphere. The dripping blood is a visceral signifier in the broader semiotic landscape of conflict and resistance depicted here, destabilizing any sense of stoic heroism. Ultimately, the power of this watercolor lies in its unsettling combination of visual simplicity and thematic complexity, inviting us to consider the multifaceted dimensions of resistance.
