Domenico Ghirlandaio’s “Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints” presents the Virgin Mary and Christ as divine rulers, a common theme in the Florentine Renaissance. Completed sometime in the late 15th century, the work reflects Florence’s deep Roman Catholic devotion. We see this not only in its subject matter, but also in the way it visually borrows from older religious traditions. Note the Virgin Mary’s central position on the throne and surrounded by saints, which reinforces the hierarchical structure of the Church. The Madonna's clothing reflects the contemporary fashionable tastes of the time. While seemingly traditional, this altarpiece also subtly mirrors the rising influence of wealthy families in Florence's religious institutions. Art historical research often involves archival work, looking at donor records and other documents, to understand the social implications of the art we see here. These reveal how even sacred images were shaped by the economic and political forces of the time.
