Théodore Valerio created "Moustachioed Slav in Belgrade" in 1854 using watercolor. Valerio, who traveled extensively, created many works depicting people he encountered. This watercolor is particularly fascinating when considered alongside broader 19th-century European fascinations with the ‘Orient,’ and with it the Balkans. The sitter's striking mustache and traditional attire situate him within a specific cultural and geographic identity, a region often exoticized by Western European perspectives. Yet, the intimate, individualized portrayal resists simple categorization. Instead of a generalized type, we see a man, his gaze direct, inviting a personal connection with the viewer. What does it mean to look at this Slav through the eyes of a French artist of the time? How might his identity be both celebrated and interpreted through a Western lens? This work serves as an entry point to think about cultural exchange, representation, and the complex interplay between observer and observed.
