Otto Mueller created 'Akte im Wasser' using glue-based distemper on paper. Observe how Mueller uses color sparingly, primarily blues, greens, and browns, creating a scene that feels both natural and dreamlike. The figures are minimally rendered, their forms simplified to essential lines and planes, almost blending with the environment. The composition is structured by vertical elements, the slender trees and reeds, which frame the open space of the water. The use of distemper gives the surface a matte, chalky texture that softens the scene’s edges, contributing to its ethereal quality. Mueller’s approach aligns with the broader expressionist movement, where emotion and inner vision take precedence over realistic representation. The artwork can be seen as destabilizing traditional representational values, leaning into a modern aesthetic. The sparseness of detail shifts attention to the formal relationships between figure and ground, color and texture. This invites viewers to project their own interpretations onto the scene, recognizing the artwork as a site of ongoing meaning-making.

In 1890, Mueller learned the lithography technique. In this planographic printmaking method, the artist draws directly on the stone that will serve as a printing plate. Here as well, line dominated Mueller’s compositions. After the printing process, he coloured this lithograph of "Nudes in the Water" by hand in grey ink and chalks of different shades, thus combining the printmaking and drawing mediums. Closely linking emphatic line and planar zones of colour, this work bears a resemblance to the artist’s drawing Naked Girl Sitting by the Water (Städel Museum, Inv. No. 16097).
