Editor: So this small, untitled photograph by Lucian and Mary Brown pictures two little girls in dresses next to an armchair, and I'm immediately struck by how it feels like a memory, or perhaps a dream. What do you see in this piece? Curator: You know, it does have that quality, doesn't it? Perhaps it's the curious lighting. For me, it evokes the hazy recollection of childhood, but with an underlying unease. There is the floral wallpaper contrasting with the stark, almost ghostly figures of the children, it's kind of unsettling. Don't you think? Editor: It's true, I hadn't really thought of that. The wallpaper almost feels suffocating now that you mention it. Curator: Photography has that power, doesn't it? To hold a moment, but also to reveal hidden layers we might not immediately perceive.
