This is a Knight Fourth Class decoration of the Military William Order, crafted from silver, enamel, and textile ribbon by an anonymous maker. The medal’s star shape, crown, and heraldic imagery are typical of European honorific orders. But here, these elements are brought together through a combination of industrial and craft processes. The silver components would have been cast and then finished by hand, while the enamel work, though permanent, demanded a delicate touch. The ribbon, woven on a loom, speaks to the mechanization of textile production in this period. Consider the politics embedded in this object. Awarded for bravery, loyalty, and merit, it signifies the importance of military values in Dutch society. At the same time, it represents a hierarchical system of status and reward. The medal embodies a complex web of social relations – between rulers and ruled, soldiers and civilians, labor and capital. Looking closely at this object, we are reminded that even seemingly straightforward symbols of honor are made from material and processes, shaped by the times in which they are created.
