This photograph, taken by a member of the Wachenheimer family in Munich between July 1931 and February 1932, captures Isabel Wachenheimer feeding pigeons on the Odeonsplatz. There’s a lovely softness to the image, like a memory half-veiled in mist. Look at how the light falls – or rather, doesn't – on the scene, creating a delicate atmosphere, muting the details. The tones are muted, blending the girl, the birds, and the architecture into a unified whole. It’s almost as if the pigeons have been layered into the image, the way they blend in. I’m reminded of Gerhard Richter’s blurred photographs rendered in paint, the way the images are almost there, almost not. The photograph feels like a fragment of a larger story, or a world just out of reach. Like all photographs, it’s a ghost of a moment, a kind of elegy, holding space for all the feelings the image evokes. It’s this ambiguity, this invitation to project and reflect, that makes it so compelling.
