This head fragment from a large ceremonial jar was crafted by the Tiwanaku people. Note the eye: staring, ever watchful. This 'oculus aeternus,' or eternal eye, transcends cultures. We see it echoed in ancient Egyptian art as the Eye of Horus, a symbol of protection, royal power, and good health, a powerful amulet promising rebirth and regeneration. Consider also the Cyclops of Greek mythology; the one-eyed giant represents primal force and untamed nature. Our fascination with the single, all-seeing eye is a primal echo, reflecting our deep-seated concerns about visibility, knowledge, and the unknown. It resurfaces, evolves, and takes on new meanings throughout history, holding both protective and ominous connotations.
