Nicholas Roerich made this pencil sketch, "Fight near Kerzhenets", as a study, perhaps for a larger painting. The thing that strikes me about this piece is the frenetic energy captured with such simple, almost childlike, marks. You can almost feel Roerich working out the composition, searching for the right balance between chaos and order. The lines are scratchy, unsure, but together they create a powerful sense of movement, of clashing forces. Look at how the figures are rendered with a few quick strokes, barely there, yet full of life and drama. And then there’s the landscape, a backdrop of rolling hills and turbulent skies that seems to mirror the turmoil below. Roerich’s work, especially his stage designs, had a huge impact on artists like Kandinsky. Both explored the spiritual in art and the power of abstraction to evoke emotion. Like Roerich, we can approach art as a process of exploration, embracing imperfection and finding beauty in the unexpected.
