Nicolas Toussaint Charlet made this print of a sergeant and a young soldier outside a police station in the 19th century. Charlet was deeply sympathetic to Napoleon and his soldiers. After Napoleon’s fall, he dedicated himself to depicting the lives of ordinary soldiers. Here, we see a moment of discussion between two soldiers. The older sergeant, weighed down by the fatigue of military life, sits while the younger, more energetic soldier gestures expansively, perhaps sharing an animated story. In the background, another soldier stands guard, his presence underscoring the ever-watchful eye of authority. Charlet's work provides a window into the social dynamics within the military. It explores themes of camaraderie, duty, and the human condition amidst the backdrop of post-Napoleonic France. It resonates with a sense of empathy for the common soldier, highlighting their experiences.
