David Burliuk made this painting, Landscape with a house, with oil on canvas at an unknown date. The painting is made up of hundreds, maybe thousands of tiny daubs of paint in greens, browns, blues and reds, and this gives the whole thing a kind of vibrating energy. Looking at the surface of the painting, you can almost feel the artist jabbing the canvas with the brush, one tiny mark at a time. It's like each little spot of color is a tiny window onto the world, and when you add them all up, they create this whole scene that feels so alive, almost like pointillism. Notice the building: Burliuk has created shadow and light on the building using a variety of reds, greens, and browns instead of blacks and greys. This piece reminds me of some of Van Gogh's landscapes, though Burliuk's mark making is much tighter and more controlled. Overall, the feeling I get from this painting is one of optimism. There is a sense of a world teeming with possibility.
