Niels Larsen Stevns made this ‘Blank’ sheet with indeterminate medium on paper, and it's got me thinking about the beauty of starting points. The creamy, off-white surface of the paper isn't perfectly smooth; there are subtle textures and variations, little imperfections that catch the light just so. It feels like the beginning of a conversation, an invitation to make a mark, any mark. I love the idea of a blank page as a space of possibility. It is a space where intention meets chance, where the artist’s hand can dance freely across the surface. There’s a little number, ‘9’ in the bottom right, like a breadcrumb trail. Maybe it’s a page from a sketchbook, or a series, each page waiting to be filled. It reminds me of Agnes Martin’s quiet grids, or even Rauschenberg’s erased de Kooning – pieces that challenge our expectations and make us consider what it means to create. It reminds us that art is always an ongoing dialogue.
