Here is the audio guide script: This ‘Kelkglas met een paarse Überfang met weggeslepen vierkanten en rechthoeken’ was made, we think, by E. Bakalowitz & Söhne using glass. It’s like they built this goblet from purple ice cubes. I love how the purple colour stains the light, and then slices it up with geometric precision. You can really sense the making, I mean, the glassblower blowing, the cutter grinding away – decisions being made, and changed. Look closely at the stem, and notice how it becomes this rising pillar of squares, leading your eye up to the bowl. It reminds me a little of some of the glasswork of Christopher Dresser. In a way this piece is about holding and containing – water, wine, light, vision, and maybe even time. It’s about how we shape and are shaped by the vessels we create. Isn’t it amazing how a simple object can hold so many thoughts?
