Dirk Kome made this photograph ‘Portret van Huub Moret, de laatste sluiswachter van Nieuwe Statenzijl’ and the texture of the photograph gives a sense of realness, of being there in the room. The color palette is subdued, with blues and browns dominating, almost like the photograph has aged or faded, mirroring the sitter and his role. There's a wonderful contrast in textures, from the lace curtains to the worn wood paneling, the slickness of the document, and the soft fabric of his shirt. It is all very present! Look at how the light illuminates Huub's face and hands, the deep shadows creating a strong sense of form. There is a focus on the hands, which are worn from time, implying labor and experience. This photograph makes me think of Rineke Dijkstra, especially the way she captures people in a moment of quiet introspection. It highlights how art is often a reflection on the human condition. It's about capturing a moment, an essence.
