Alevtyna Kakhidze made this Untitled work with a marker on what looks like paper. I love how the drawing seems to appear right before your eyes, line by line. It feels like a thought being made visible, immediate and unrehearsed. The lines are simple, quick, and kind of wobbly, which gives the figure a lot of personality. There’s this great sense of humor in the way the artist depicts the cat-like man, complete with glasses and a little bowtie. The red accents on the crutch and in the speech bubble add a punch of energy to the otherwise monochrome drawing. It’s playful but also feels like a commentary, maybe a bit political with that sign he’s holding. Kakhidze reminds me of artists like William Kentridge, who also use simple means to create these layered, evocative images. It's all about how a few lines can say so much, leaving plenty of room for us to fill in the blanks.
