Jan Veth created this chalk transfer drawing, its title translating to 'Rubbing of the chalk drawing on page 18 recto,' sometime between 1864 and 1925. The 'Abklatsch' technique, involving the transfer of chalk from one surface to another, allows for a unique layering of textures and tones, resulting in soft, almost ghostly images. This particular work offers us a glimpse into Veth’s working methods; it's more process than product. Note the intimacy of this piece. The method itself is immediate, tactile, and inherently reproductive; it speaks to broader issues of labor, originality and value, while also offering a quiet, almost unassuming aesthetic experience. It challenges conventional ideas about artistic skill, originality, and authenticity. The beauty here lies not only in the final image but also in the traces of the artistic process itself.
