Editor: This is Pablo Picasso's "Neo-Classical Painter in his Studio," held at the Tate. It has a very linear feel to it. What strikes you about the composition? Curator: The stark lines create a complex interplay of spaces. Note how the artist utilizes line to create both depth and flatness simultaneously. Editor: I see that! The lines almost seem to trap the figures in the space. Curator: Precisely. This tension is further heightened by the limited tonal range. The starkness emphasizes the geometric relationships within the composition. We see in this work how the artist explores and challenges formal boundaries. Editor: I learned so much about seeing line in this piece! Curator: As did I. Analyzing the structural components reveals the ingenuity within this work.

The artist in his studio was one of Picasso’s favourite themes, and in November 1963 he made at least twenty prints devoted to it. Instead of depicting the artist’s studio as a place of contemplation and work, he populated it with models, onlookers, mythical creatures and others, turning it into a social hub where no-one looked out of place.
