Untitled (debutantes in hallway) by Robert Burian

Untitled (debutantes in hallway) c. 1966

Dimensions 12.7 x 8.89 cm (5 x 3 1/2 in.)

Robert Burian created this silver gelatin print, “Untitled (debutantes in hallway),” and something about it captures a specific time. You know, the camera is so good at stopping time, and in this little black and white rectangle, Burian asks us to think about these debs and all their youthful excitement. I wonder what he was thinking when he clicked the shutter? Was he trying to capture their nervousness, their energy, or just their beauty? The picture seems so casual, like it was a spur-of-the-moment thing. And what about the women? Are they on the cusp of some big change? You can see the details of the setting and the clothing, but the faces are what really draw you in, don’t they? Photographers are always talking to each other through their images, just like painters. They are inspired by each other, stealing each other's ideas, and making their own thing.
