This is a print of two 'Fauteuil en stoel' or 'armchairs' by Léon Laroche. They’re rendered in a soft, almost pastel-like palette, with a delicate touch, giving the impression of watercolours. The colours are understated, yet the details are intricate, hinting at the craftsmanship involved in designing such furniture. The lines are so fine, especially in the ornate details of the fabric and the chair's frame. Look at the almost imperceptible gradations of tone which give the impression of depth and shadow. There’s a real sense of care in each line, suggesting a deep appreciation for the object being depicted. I love the small touches, the detailing of the fringing, each element is rendered with such precision that it elevates the ordinary. It reminds me of the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, someone else interested in the cross-section between design and art. Both artists share a similar dedication to beauty and refinement, and leave us with something which invites contemplation, celebrating art as an ongoing conversation across time.
