This engraving by Johann Sadeler the first, made around 1590, depicts King David playing the harp amidst angels dancing and making music. Here, in the late 16th century, we see King David not just as a historical figure, but as a symbol of divinely sanctioned rule. Sadeler was working during a time of religious and political upheaval in Europe, where the images of powerful biblical figures were often marshaled to shore up contemporary authority. The choice to surround David with musical angels is particularly telling. Music, in this context, was often viewed as a divine language, capable of elevating the soul. David’s act of playing becomes a conduit for divine communication, reinforcing a sense of harmony between earthly and heavenly power. The naked cherubic angels introduce a layer of sensuality, while at the same time presenting a vision of purity. Sadeler's engraving not only reflects the religious and political climate of his time, but also uses music and angelic imagery to convey power and grace.
