This valved ophicleide, also known as a bombardon, was made by Franz Leibelt in the mid-19th century. The instrument, which plays in the key of B-flat, is a brass wind instrument with a large bell and a complex system of valves. The ophicleide was popular in orchestras and bands during the 19th century, but it was eventually replaced by the tuba. This example is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
