This bronze medal was crafted in 1879 by Alexander Isaac de Vries for Amsterdam's theatrical competition. The winged figure of Fame, a classical symbol of renown, dominates the scene. We see Fame again and again in various forms throughout history. Winged victories crowned emperors in ancient Rome, angels trumpeted divine messages in medieval art, and now, here she is bestowing recognition upon theatrical arts. Note how the symbol of Fame evolves, reflecting changing cultural values and beliefs. In each of its many representations, the emotional core remains – the human desire for recognition. This medal becomes more than just a commemorative object. It echoes our eternal, often subconscious, yearning for lasting legacy and applause. Symbols such as Fame are not linear; they continually resurface, evolve, and assume new meanings, reflecting our collective cultural memory.
