Sally Gabori painted My Country with bold strokes and a vibrant palette, a testament to her deep connection with her homeland. It’s easy to get lost in the push and pull of colors, and the way the paint seems to build up in places, like a memory being layered onto the canvas. Look at that jagged edge where the red meets the white. See how the red bleeds a little, creating this raw, almost vulnerable line? It reminds me of the way stories are passed down, not always neat and tidy, but full of life. Gabori didn't start painting until she was in her seventies, and her work has this incredible immediacy, reminding me a bit of some of Joan Mitchell’s late paintings, with their expressive color and gestural energy. You can feel the history of painting in both, but also something deeply personal and new. Art is an ongoing conversation, right?
